“Yellow Peony”

This painting from my peony series is inspired by a haiku written by Kaga no Chiyo (Chiyo-ni), one of Japan’s most respected female poets of the Edo period. Chiyo-ni was known for her gentle, observant way of capturing everyday moments - flowers, seasons, and small gestures - with remarkable sensitivity.

Her work often reflects the harmony between nature and emotion, showing how beauty can be found in quiet, ordinary things.

This Haiku is slightly altered to fit the yellow peony flowers:

黄牡丹といふといへども紅ほのか

Ki botan to iu to iedomo beni honoka

They call it yellow
yet faintly,
a breath of crimson glows.
