“Blue Peony”

This painting from my peony series is inspired by a haiku written by Kaga no Chiyo (Chiyo-ni), one of Japan’s most respected female poets of the Edo period. Chiyo-ni was known for her gentle, observant way of capturing everyday moments - flowers, seasons, and small gestures - with remarkable sensitivity.

Her work often reflects the harmony between nature and emotion, showing how beauty can be found in quiet, ordinary things.

This Haiku is slightly altered to fit the blue peony flowers:

青牡丹といふといへども紫ほのか

Ao botan to iu to iedomo murasaki honoka

They call it blue
yet quietly,
a hint of violet stirs beneath.
